Singapore Gallery Month

Lasting just one weekend in previous editions, Art Galleries Association of Singapore’s (Agas) annual festival has now been expanded to almost the entire month of September. There are new exhibitions and lifestyle activities at more than 30 art galleries and art spaces across Singapore.

The line-up for Singapore Gallery Month includes the popular Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama at Ota Fine Arts at Gillman Barracks, Thai artist Natee Utarit at STPI in Robertson Quay and “Prince William of Taiwan” Demos Chiang – great-grandson of former Chinese president Chiang Kai-shek – at Whitestone Gallery at Tanjong Pagar Distripark.

There are also group shows. Haridas Contemporary in Kallang is having the first edition of its annual series highlighting works from the region.

39+ Art Space at Tanjong Pagar Distripark features Singapore artists Aki Hassan and Sunaina Bhalla along with seven international artists in its stable, including Turkish Ozer Toraman and Korean-American Sarah Lee.

Art aside, Agas members have also organised wellness programmes such as yoga and sound bath sessions, held in calming spaces like the Emily Hill bungalow of The Private Museum.

There are sake gallery crawls, kintsugi and jewellery-making workshops and a speed-dating soiree – though the last is more to connect curators, collectors and artists than to match potential lovebirds.

What The Street!

What The Street! by Wesley Aroozoo PHOTO: WESLEY AROOZOO

This is a pick you can enjoy from the comforts of your own home.

Educator and film-maker Wesley Aroozoo has created a new Power Rangers-inspired video series called What The Street!, which explores lesser-known origins of streets in Singapore.

In episodes lasting just two minutes, Power Rangers-like characters take on villains – a sea turtle, a deranged clown and a chomping shark.

They hark back to streets’ origins: Katong is Javanese for sea turtle and Coney Island was meant to be a theme park.

The five episodes have already clocked more than 300,000 views in total, and Aroozoo says he has been receiving doodles from kids sketching the characters from his show.
