Lisa of Blackpink won the Best K-Pop award at the MTV Video Music Awards as a solo artist for the second time.

She is the first K-pop solo artist to win the award twice.

The ceremony – dominated by global pop star Taylor Swift, who took home seven awards including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year and Best Pop – took place on Sept 11 at the UBS Arena in New York City.

Lisa clinched the Best K-Pop award with her song Rockstar, over strong nominees like BTS member Jungkook’s Seven, NCT Dream’s Smoothie, NewJeans’ Super Shy, Stray Kids’ Lock and Tomorrow X Together’s Deja Vu.

“Rockstar was a meaningful comeback for me after Lalisa so this is very special to me. Thank you to the RCA family, team Lloud, Blinks and Lilies all around the world. Thank you so much for this award,” said Lisa in her acceptance speech. Blinks refers to fans of Blackpink, while Lilies is the name of Lisa’s fandom.

Lisa, who first won the K-Pop award in 2022 for Lalisa, also performed Rockstar and her new track New Woman at the event.

In addition to Best K-Pop, she was nominated in four other categories in 2024 – Best Choreography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing and Best Performance.

K-pop boy group Seventeen won Best Group, a category formerly known as Best Group of the Year. BTS won this award four consecutive years, from 2019 to 2022, with Blackpink taking it in 2023.

Seventeen did not attend the ceremony.

K-pop girl group Le Sserafim won the Best Push Performance award with its song Easy.

This award recognises artists featured in the MTV Push campaign, which highlights emerging talents.
